Galaxies Nebulae Star Clusters Constellations Multiple Stars
This is the constellation of Auriga, the Charioteer. Auriga is high in the sky during the winter months and is dominated by the bright star Capella, at magnitude 0.1 the sixth brightest in the sky.
Like Cassiopeia, the Milky way passes through this constellation, and there are several open clusters to be seen in and around Auriga.

This is a deeper picture of Auriga than the one here, although it too shows the whole constellation, the field of view presented here is narrower and no details of surrounding constellations are seen. The open clusters M36, M37, and M38 are clearly seen, along with the areas of nebulosity IC405 (known as the Flaming Star nebula) and IC410, also associated with open clusters.
This picture is a stack of two exposures, one for 32 minutes and the other for 20 minutes, both using a 50mm lens at f/4.0. The film was Kodak Elitechrome 400. Scanned in high resolution by Snappy Snaps and processed in the Gimp.
